🇪🇺 Schengen Area: New Entry/Exit System Launches On 12.10.25– What You Need to Know

10/14/2025

📅 Starting October 12, the new Entry/Exit System (EES) officially comes into effect across all Schengen Area countries, including Greece.
The system replaces the old passport stamping method with digital registration of travelers’ entry and exit records.

It aims to make border checks faster, safer, and fully electronic.

🧭 What Is the EES?

The EES applies to non-EU travelers visiting Schengen countries for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
The rollout will happen gradually and is expected to be fully operational by April 10, 2026.

The Schengen Area includes all EU member states (except Ireland and Cyprus) as well as Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Iceland, and Norway.

🛃 How It Works

🔹 Border officers will verify your personal and biometric data — including facial recognition and fingerprints.
🔹 Upon departure, the system automatically confirms your compliance with permitted stay limits.
🔹 On future trips, only a quick biometric check will be required — no more passport stamps.
🔹 Children under 12 will only need to have their photo taken, no fingerprints required.

💰 The process is completely free for all travelers.
