Athens (/ˈæθɨnz/;[2] Modern Greek: Αθήνα, Athína, [aˈθina], Ancient Greek: Ἀθῆναι, Athēnai)
The capital of Greece and Attica Prefecture. The city covers an area of 39 km², and consists of a population of over 665 thousand inhabitants. It is a modern metropolis that is the economic and cultural center of the country. Every year, millions of travelers visit Athens, to enjoy the rich history and legendary sights of this ancient city.
Upon arrival in Athens, the top priority visited site is the Acropolis. Seeing the city from the top of the hill, the first involuntary thought is usually how to move here permanently. From above, the city is reminiscent of the “white winged dove” – a symbol of the goddess Athena Pallas. White roofs, blue sky and the sight of mysterious hills and open sea further away on the horizon will leave an unforgettable impression on you, and you will certainly love this city with all your heart.
The historical city centre is filled with a variety of museums, galleries and archaeological monuments. A mere walk amidst the oldest areas of Athens – Monastiraki and Plaka – should prove an unforgettable experience.
Amongst other attraction sights in Athens, it is also worth noting the importance of the underground metro. At each station there are stands with various Museum exhibits, which make even the simplest trip underground an interesting and captivating experience.
Athens hosts the famous port of Piraeus – the largest seaport in Europe and third in the world by cargo volume. Dozens of ferries set off from its ports towards all sorts of corners of the Mediterranean sea on an annual basis.
Also in Athens, within merely 20 km from the city centre, lies the largest airport of Greece Eleftherios Venizelos. It serves more than 18 million passengers annually, and is one of the most contemporary international airports in the world.
An additional point of interest is the acquisition of property in coastal areas, starting from the suburban areas of the capital (Voulyagmeni, Varkiza, Kavouri) via Saronidou and Lagonisi up to the Lavrio itself. Lovers of natural landscapes will find the areas of East Attica more appealing.
